Hail, deep cold and months of snow. A roof that cannot rust.

Edmonton weather is summer hail and thunderstorms, deep cold and months of snow, and freeze-thaw at both ends of winter; farther north, the boreal forest brings wildfire. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each, and where it has limits.

Hail

Impact-rated, and honest about it

Edmonton gets damaging hail too. The storm of August 2, 2019 brought large hail to west Edmonton, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain, and about $90 million in insured damage. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. No roof is hail-proof, and the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in).

Freeze-thaw

Deep cold, then melt and refreeze

Edmonton winters are long and cold, and in spring and fall the temperature crosses freezing day after day. Each cycle loosens asphalt granules and curls shingles; cedar takes on water that freezes in the grain. Aluminum absorbs nothing and cannot rust. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with no exposed fastener, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Snow

Light on the framing, built for the load

Interlock panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre depending on profile, a fraction of concrete tile. That leaves the structure's capacity for what a Northern Alberta winter puts on it: snow, for months. Smooth aluminum lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards over entries, walkways and the driveway at the quote.

Ice dams

We look at the attic, not just the roof

Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. No roof covering stops that on its own, and ice damming is excluded from the material warranty. At the consultation we look at insulation and ventilation with you and tell you what we see.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

The north knows wildfire: about 2,400 homes and buildings were lost in Fort McMurray in 2016, 374 properties in Slave Lake in 2011, and 358 of Jasper's 1,113 townsite structures in 2024. FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A roofing and advises avoiding wood shakes and shingles. Under ASTM E108 (CAN/ULC-S107 in Canada) a fire classification belongs to an assembly: on our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum does not ignite, but no roof is fireproof.

Long summer days, a finish made for them

Summer days are long this far north. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years and has CRRC-rated solar reflectance from 0.25 to 0.44 depending on colour, and thermal emittance from 0.83 to 0.86.

No. Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. has one office, in Calgary, and it serves Edmonton and Northern Alberta as well as Calgary and the south. For a home in the Edmonton area the free consultation is on Zoom or at your home, at a time that suits you, and our own crews do the install. Service and warranty questions go to the same Alberta team, by phone or by email.

Who installs Interlock® metal roofs in Edmonton?

We do. Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. is the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta and has installed Interlock® aluminum roofs since 1999, including in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert and Spruce Grove. Will an Interlock roof stand up to Edmonton hail?

It is built for it, but no roof is hail-proof. Edmonton gets damaging hail: the Insurance Bureau of Canada put insured damage from the August 2, 2019 storm over west Edmonton, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain at about $90 million. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest class in that standard, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. Very large hail can still dent metal. The material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in) and the labour warranty excludes hail, so hail damage is a matter for your home insurance. Ask your insurer how they treat an impact-rated roof; we will give you the documents they may want.

How does a metal roof handle an Edmonton winter?

Well, with two things planned at the quote. Aluminum has nothing to crack, curl or soak up water through months of cold and the freeze-thaw of spring and fall, and the panels lock on four sides with the fasteners concealed. Snow slides off smooth metal, so we plan snow guards over entries, walkways and the driveway. And ice dams come from heat escaping into the attic, not from the roof covering, so we look at insulation and ventilation with you. Ice damming is excluded from the material warranty, and we say so up front.

What warranties come with an Interlock roof in Edmonton?

Two. The manufacturer, Interlock Roofing, gives the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on the aluminum material and its factory finish: it runs for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, is transferable once, and excludes workmanship. We, Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., give a 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty on the workmanship of the installation, for the purchaser who lives in the home. They are separate documents with separate terms, and you can read both in full before you buy.
